Warren Buffett – The Greatest Investor of the Modern World

Warren Buffett is widely regarded as the greatest investor of all time. He entered the world of investing with USD 100 in 1957 and is now worth more than USD 40 billion, with big gains from Coca-Cola and Gillette. Perhaps what made Buffett an icon of the investing world is his relaxed, easy-to-understand approach to investing and to life in general. One memorable line of his, “there is no difference between you and me”, is often quoted with some irony, but the truth is that his approach to investing is one we can all learn from, whether we apply it to the world of finance or beyond.

In The Warren Buffett Way, Robert Hagstrom distills the essence of Buffett’s strategy into simple principles that investors at every level can use. And the life lessons in the book are truly timeless.

The Warren Buffett Way – Robert G. Hagstrom

The book distills Warren Buffett’s investment theories into 12 tenets. Although it is a book about stock investing methods, it deals mainly with investment principles. Buffett himself follows only value investing theory, and the ideas in the book have kept their value almost unchanged over the decades. These principles are considered the best possible compass for investors.

Hagstrom’s Four Groups of Investment Tenets

Robert Hagstrom divides Buffett’s philosophy into 4 groups of tenets: business, financial, management and value. Under each, he lists questions we know Buffett must consider when investing. They serve as a simple checklist to help us identify companies with attractive long-term investment prospects.

Business tenets

  1. Is the business simple and understandable?
  2. Does the business have a consistent operating history?
  3. Does the business have favorable long-term prospects?

Financial tenets

  1. What are the company’s owner earnings?
  2. What are its return on equity and profit margins?
  3. Has the company created at least one dollar of market value for every dollar retained?

Management tenets

  1. Is management rational?
  2. Is management candid with shareholders?
  3. Does management resist the institutional imperative?

Value tenets

  1. What is the value of the company?
  2. Can it be bought at a significant discount to its value?

Main topics covered in the book:

  • A brief biography of Warren Buffett – the finest investor in history
