Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl is a book about one of America’s foremost investors, Warren Buffett. The author studies all of Buffett’s habits and compares them with the latest research on men, women and money. In the end she reaches a conclusion: the investing style of the great Warren Buffett is rather feminine. To understand why she concludes this, let’s take a closer look at the book.

The Author of Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl
LouAnn Lofton began working at The Motley Fool as a reporter in 2000 and later became an editor in charge of online content. The Motley Fool is a well-known multimedia financial services company based in Alexandria, Virginia, USA. Founded in 1993, it built a large following through its websites and has strengthened its position over many years of business, earning the trust of investors in the US and abroad.
Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl is the book that made LouAnn Lofton’s name. In it, she shares Warren Buffett’s investing secrets and principles to help us succeed in stock investing.

What the Book Covers
Temperament – The Most Important Trait of Any Investor
Financial panic and anxiety almost swamped the entire stock market, especially after the events of 2008. On 6 October 2008, the Dow Jones fell below 10,000 points for the first time since 2004. Then, on 9 October, the Standard & Poor’s index was down more than 42% from the previous year, quickly wiping out all the gains built up before. In less than 4 weeks, investors were reeling from these events.
By contrast, Warren Buffett showed no fear and did not panic-sell his stocks. Instead, he calmly assessed the situation, and he advised investors to do the same. In his view, we must first get through the hard times in order to come out ahead later. The moment everyone is fleeing is the best time to buy stocks, a real bargain for anyone bold enough to be greedy and seize the opportunity. Still, this way of thinking is hard to accept in such crazy times.
Women’s Advantages in Investing
After the 2008 crisis, men’s influence seemed far more limited than women’s. Researchers then looked closely at the differences between male and female professional investors and found some interesting things. Men often think they know more than they actually do.
Women, on the other hand, readily admit what they don’t know. Women tend to stay calmer in the face of market volatility, while men panic and tend to sell off stocks when they see them fall sharply. Naturally, they then suffer heavy losses when the market recovers. It is men’s overconfidence that leads them to make trades they should not be making.
The Female Investor Profile Described in Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl
Female investors often differ from male investors in many ways:
- They trade less
- They are never overconfident, and they even know things they don’t think they know.
- They are better at avoiding risk
- They are more realistic
- They spend most of their time researching investments and weigh their decisions very carefully before investing.
- They are largely immune to peer pressure
- They always find ways to learn from their own mistakes
Trade Less, Earn More
Warren Buffett has always held a “buy and hold” mindset and trades little; he does not believe in short-term trading. The image of Wall Street investors frantically buying and selling one ticker after another runs completely against his view. He is an investor who always calculates carefully and meticulously.
One of the key traits behind Warren Buffett’s investing temperament is patience. He is always willing to wait a long time to find the perfect investment opportunity. To do what Buffett does, you must be truly resilient and practice a great deal.
Valuing People and Relationships
For Warren Buffett, valuing relationships between people is a prerequisite for running a business well. You will sleep better at night if you trust your partners. In your investing career, always remember: “A business will never be stronger than the people who run it”. Before you decide to invest in any business, first study its management carefully. Find a smart, sharp manager and you are already halfway to success. Above all, never put profits above people.
